Yummy, your first order of peanut butter fudge has arrived. While everything looks in order and seems to taste just fine, how can you be sure you have received the freshest fudge the company makes? There are a few characteristics of the fudge and its packaging you want to examine carefully. If your fudge can pass these 4 tests then it is probably as fresh as possible.

The Packaging

When you first receive your peanut butter fudge shipment examine the packaging surrounding the fudge very carefully. If the fudge comes wrapped in cellophane check the nooks and folds for dust. Fudge that has been sitting around for a while will have an accumulation of dust caught in the cellophane.

If you fudge arrived in a tin, check the outside of the tin carefully. Does the tin have a lot of scratches? Is there rust around the seams of the tin? When you open the tin check very carefully for signs of aging on the inside too.

Inhale Deeply

Open up the container that holds the peanut butter fudge and take a big sniff. Even sugar can get old and stale. If the fudge smells like the inside of a donut shop at the end of the day chances are your product might be stale. The smell can best be described as sweet but bitter. Fresh peanut butter fudge will have a clean sweet smell like peanut butter sugar cookies that have just been removed from the oven.

Test Touch

Gently draw a finger across a piece of the peanut butter fudge. It should feel soft and smooth. It is feels rough and hard it is probably old and stale. Break a piece in half. The fudge should bend easily and not crumble. Fudge that falls apart is probably not the freshest In addition, there should be some give to the piece. Place a little pressure on the piece of fudge. You should come away with a small indentation.

Taste

If you bite into a piece of fudge and find yourself wrinkling your nose, saying ick, and giving the rest of the piece to your dog, who also will not touch it, chances are you have some stale peanut butter fudge. A fresh fudge should be soft to bite and should melt in your mouth. There should be no sensation of sugar crystals or a bitter taste that indicates the fudge is stale. If it is stale be sure to ask for your money back!

If you follow the four fresh fudge tests you will be sure to find the company that makes and delivers the freshest peanut butter fudge. Packaging, smell, touch and taste all have an important role in determining if your fudge is fresh. Keep in mind that even failing one of these test is an indication of second rate peanut butter fudge. Never hesitate to ask for your money back or move on to another company if you have any indication your peanut butter fudge is not as fresh as it could be.
