Often we will see and hear about telescopes, and have a preconceived notion that a telescope is essential to be able to do backyard astronomy, however this is not the case. Nor is it essential to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to get started in backyard astronomy as a hobby.

It is true that to get the best views of the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and the other planets, and the nebula, and other deep space objects needs a good telescope; but even the best telescope can not be any good, if the user does not know much about space!

* First Steps To Lifelong Fun With Backyard Astronomy
So many people believe that you need a telescope, and this is true, however it is not the first step. Also owning a telescope does not necessarily mean you will get the best out of a telescope. So many people buy telescopes from toy stores, and many of those people few years later never have an interest in astronomy again! Why is that?

Some may be interested as a fad, but I believe that so many people leave astronomy as a hobby because they have not thought about the basics. What use is a car if you don't know how to use it? This is same as in astronomy, and so many people leave the learning till after they buy a telescope.

* Is The Telescope The First Step?
The key then becomes not buying a telescope first, but to get to know the sky. Getting to know how to navigate the heavens becomes the first step. And this can be done with star charts, and practical astronomy books.

Also astronomy binoculars can make a low cost method of getting into astronomy. Also the binoculars (as long as they are not too big to carry), can be used for a number of different purposes such as birding or hunting or even when traveling.

* Getting More Out Of Astronomy
A telescope can truly come into its own when you know how to navigate the heavens. When you know what there is, and where it is, a telescope can be really useful. To get the best out of astronomy with a telescope will need buying a good telescope in the beginning.

Now a point that needs to be made is that of Galileo. The telescope that Galileo used was likely more worse than the ones even in a toy store, but because he knew where things were, he was able to get the best out of the telescope.

A suggestion I can offer is that you invest as much as you can in the telescope; while still purchasing the books that will help you get the best out of the telescope. That way, you will have years of enjoyment from the telescope, and what's more each passing year will make that investment well worth it.
Author Resource:- These links contain valuable information on how to get started in backyard astronomy. Another one that is great for buying telescopes is buying telescopes. Binoculars are another option and a great place to take a look is astronomy binoculars.
